Cold Sores

Ailment
Inflammation of the lips and surrounding skin caused by by herpes simplex virus 1, producing small, transient, irritating, and sometimes painful fluid-filled blisters.

Additional Information
Some people are particularly prone to cold sores and find they recur whenever they are overtired or stressed, when they have some other infection such as a cold or 'flu, or even when they are exposed to extreme sunlight or cold winds. Cold sores do not respond to antibiotics and there is no known medical cure, so treatment usually involves merely soothing the pain and trying to stop further infections.
Many antiseptics are too harsh and merely cause further irritation to already sensitive skin. However, tea tree oil can be applied directly to the lesions without causing pain and its strong action helps clear up the infection and stops it from spreading.
