Periodontal Disease

Ailment
Commonly caused by the microbial flora of the mouth. These bacteria, if left unchecked, form deposits
(plaque) at and below the gingival (gum) margins. Initially the disease affects the superficial parts of the gums only. The bacteria, which form the plaque, release toxins that irritate the gums, triggering an immune response which causes the gums to swell, turn red, and bleed easily. In the early phase, before irreversible effects have developed, the disease is termed “gingivitis” (see Gingivitis). Plaque that is not removed can harden into “tartar” (calculus). The tartar build-up worsens the condition, causing the gums to pull back from the teeth.
This stage of periodontal disease is termed “periodontitis”. Bacteria can now invade and infect and destroy the underlying connective tissue and bone leading to the loss of teeth. Periodontal disease has been recognised
as a risk factor for heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and premature babies.
