Scabies

Ailment
Contagious skin infection caused by the itch mite, Sarcoptes scabiei. Scabies is characterised by severe itching of the skin. The mite, transmitted by close contact with infected humans, burrows into outer layers of skin, where the female lays eggs. Two to four months after the first infection, sensitisation to the mites and their metabolic products begins, resulting in a pruritic papular rash most common on the webs of fingers, on the groin, penis, nipples and waist.
